Episode 30 – Healing Herbs for Hormone Imbalances

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) take a look into herbs that help correct hormone imbalances. This is part 2 of our Healing Herbs series.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 30 - Healing Herbs For Hormone Imbalances

Hormones are chemical messages that provide specific “instructions” to the body… instructions that dictate and determine how the body will act.

While every system of the body (nervous, digestive, immune, musculoskeletal) is impacted by hormones, there is one that stands out from the rest:

The reproductive system.

In fact, for most people the only hormones they are aware of are those associated with the male and female reproductive systems:

Estrogen
Progesterone
Testosterone

All three of these hormones are found in both men and women. However, it is the amount of each that differs.

Men have more testosterone while women have more estrogen and progesterone.

Problems occur in either sex when the balance of these hormones is off.

That’s where herbs come in.

Herbs may provide a natural solution for correcting hormone imbalances… which leads us to the topic of this week’s episode:

“Healing Herbs For Hormone Imbalances”

Specifically, we discuss herbs that may help correct estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone deficiencies.

As a bonus, we also talk about an herb that has been demonstrated to help some men reduce an enlarged prostate.

This is a “can’t miss” episode for anyone dealing with a hormone imbalance.

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) sit down with the dynamic Caresty Carpenter who, along with her husband Kevin, gave up successful jobs in Mississippi, moved to Alabama, opened a nutrition based business and is now making a tremendous impact on the local community… all without having a backup plan. (May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 28 - “No Plan B” with Caresty Carpenter

Imagine being in your early 30’s, happily married with two beautiful children and a job you love.

Further imagine that your husband, who also enjoys his work, starts feeling a tug to move back to the town he grew up in.

A town in a different state.

What would you do?

If you’re Caresty Carpenter, you pray for wisdom and guidance.

You also pray for some kind of confirmation… like jobs opening up for you and your husband in the town you’re considering moving to.

Well, God is good and Caresty and her husband Kevin did receive confirmation.

However, it wasn’t in the line of work that either of them had been in.

It was in a completely new field… a field that together they were developing a growing interest in:

Health and nutrition.

Listen to this episode to learn how Caresty and Kevin went from working as a hair stylist and a trim carpenter in Mississippi to owning a thriving business called Spartan Nutrition in Saraland, Alabama.

Their journey has not been easy… but it has been rewarding.

It also HAD to work as there was “No Plan B”.

Her story will inspire you and build your faith 🙂

Episode 27 – Healing Herbs (Part 1)

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at how a few of our favorite herbs and how they can be used to help you battle stress, keep your memory sharp and reduce inflammation

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 27 - Healing Herbs, Part 1

Stressed?

Memory not what it once was?

Body inflamed?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, don't worry.

We've got you covered.

Specifically, on this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we're going to talk about some herbs that may be just what you need.

(Always check with your health care provider first.)

Here's the thing about herbs:

They've been around for thousands of years as a natural way to treat various health conditions.

Unfortunately, they lost some of their shine when prescriptive drugs became popular approximately 100 years ago.

But the times, they are a changing.

Herbs are making a comeback... and in a big way.

People are tired of all the dangerous side effects associated with prescription drugs.

They want more natural ways to deal with health issues.

They want herbs!

So, herbs it is.

On this episode we talk about three healing herbs in particular:

1) Ashwaganda
2) Ginkgo Biloba
3) Turmeric

All three of these herbs provide a natural, safe and effective alternative to prescriptive drugs.

All three of these herbs should own a spot in your health “toolbox”… ready to be used if needed.

And, all three of these herbs are discussed in this week’s episode.

So please give it a listen and, as always, consider sharing it with a friend.

Episode 17 – Understanding Leaky Gut

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at a condition that affects millions of people… yet few know anything about it: Leaky Gut

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 17 - Understanding Leaky Gut

The body is amazing… especially the Digestive System!

Food goes in one end (the mouth) and out the other (the anus). Along the way, the nutrients the body needs to nourish the cells, muscles and organs are taken into the body through a process called absorption.

Specifically absorption occurs in the part of the digestive tract known as the Small Intestine.

The nutrients that are absorbed from the digestive system into the blood stream do so through “tight junctions”. These tight junctions only allow “good” nutrients to pass through.

Unfortunately, a poor diet, NSAID’s, antibiotics, gluten, dairy, sugar, pesticides, and stress can all create “holes” in these tight junctions, allowing “bad” particles to pass into the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body.

These “holes” are referred to as a Leaky Gut and the bad particles that pass into the bloodstream can result in a bunch of health problems… most notably, skin disorders, AutoImmune Disease and neurological disturbances.

Understanding Leaky Gut is vital to maintain and achieve good health.

Be ready to take some notes 🙂

As always, we hope you enjoy this episode and share it with a friend.

Episode 15 – The Stomach… and Acid Reflux

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) continue to look at the Digestive System… specifically the stomach and the number one digestive problem of the stomach: Acid Reflux.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 15 - The Stomach… and Acid Reflux

The first thing you should know about the stomach is that it MUST be acidic for digestion to take place.

To ensure its acidity, Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is secreted into the stomach whenever the presence of food is detected.

This strong acid serves two important purposes:

1) Destroy any harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites that may be in the food.

2) Activate Pepsin… a digestive enzyme that plays a major role in the breakdown of protein.

When all is well, digestion in the stomach works like a charm. However, when things aren’t working well, symptoms appear.

Bloating, gas, indigestion and heartburn are all signs of improper stomach digestion.

Possible causes are:

Poor food choices
Insufficient Digestive Enzymes
Diluted Digestive Enzymes

Undigested food in the stomach can cause additional problems.

Specifically, undigested food can begin to “rot”. This rotting food can then produce MORE acid.

Excess acid can begin to move up into the esophagus causing heartburn.

What’s the solution?

We DON’T recommend medications like Prilosec, Pepcin, or Nexium.

Why not?

Because they only mask the symptoms… they DON’T correct the underlying problem.

Plus they are linked with increase chance of stomach cancer, bone fractures and kidney disease.

Instead, we recommend a few simple, common sense tactics that are not only easy to employ… they’re safe and effective at CORRECTING the problem.

You can find out all about them by listening to this episode!

Episode 13 – You’re Not Fat… You’re Bloated!

Are you one of the millions of people who struggle with getting rid of “belly fat”? What if the probably isn’t that you’re fat but that you’re bloated? On this episode we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) discuss what to do when you’re not fat… you’re bloated.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 13 - You’re Not Fat… You’re Bloated!

Millions of people struggle with “belly fat”.

But what if your belly really isn’t fat… it’s bloated?

On this episode, we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) share what YOU can do to identify - and eliminate - a bloated stomach.

Step one is to realize that a bloated stomach is one that is filled with undigested food. That is, the food you eat is getting into the stomach but isn’t being properly broken down.

Food that is not being broken down (digested) will lay in the stomach and rot… resulting in bloating, gas and excess acid. Left there long enough it will cause your stomach to swell and cause acid reflux.

Taking medication for the swelling or reflux may provide temporary relief… but it WON’T fix the problem! If anything, over time, it will make the problem worse!

So, what’s the solution?

Two suggestions;

First, you’re going to have to make changes in your diet. Any food you eat that causes your stomach to be upset is simply not good for you.

At least not for now. (You may be able to eat it again later)

Second, you may want to look into taking a digestive enzyme.

Digestive enzymes help the body break down food in the stomach. Without them you won’t be able to properly digest your food.

Different types of digestive enzymes break down different types of foods. That is, there are digestive enzymes that break down protein, digestive enzymes that break down fats, and digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates/sugars.

Which one do you need?

Listen to this episode to find out 🙂
