Episode 30 – Healing Herbs for Hormone Imbalances

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) take a look into herbs that help correct hormone imbalances. This is part 2 of our Healing Herbs series.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 30 - Healing Herbs For Hormone Imbalances

Hormones are chemical messages that provide specific “instructions” to the body… instructions that dictate and determine how the body will act.

While every system of the body (nervous, digestive, immune, musculoskeletal) is impacted by hormones, there is one that stands out from the rest:

The reproductive system.

In fact, for most people the only hormones they are aware of are those associated with the male and female reproductive systems:

Estrogen
Progesterone
Testosterone

All three of these hormones are found in both men and women. However, it is the amount of each that differs.

Men have more testosterone while women have more estrogen and progesterone.

Problems occur in either sex when the balance of these hormones is off.

That’s where herbs come in.

Herbs may provide a natural solution for correcting hormone imbalances… which leads us to the topic of this week’s episode:

“Healing Herbs For Hormone Imbalances”

Specifically, we discuss herbs that may help correct estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone deficiencies.

As a bonus, we also talk about an herb that has been demonstrated to help some men reduce an enlarged prostate.

This is a “can’t miss” episode for anyone dealing with a hormone imbalance.

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) sit down with the dynamic Caresty Carpenter who, along with her husband Kevin, gave up successful jobs in Mississippi, moved to Alabama, opened a nutrition based business and is now making a tremendous impact on the local community… all without having a backup plan. Listen to learn how, and why, she did it!

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 28 - “No Plan B” with Caresty Carpenter

Imagine being in your early 30’s, happily married with two beautiful children and a job you love.

Further imagine that your husband, who also enjoys his work, starts feeling a tug to move back to the town he grew up in.

A town in a different state.

What would you do?

If you’re Caresty Carpenter, you pray for wisdom and guidance.

You also pray for some kind of confirmation… like jobs opening up for you and your husband in the town you’re considering moving to.

Well, God is good and Caresty and her husband Kevin did receive confirmation.

However, it wasn’t in the line of work that either of them had been in.

It was in a completely new field… a field that together they were developing a growing interest in:

Health and nutrition.

Listen to this episode to learn how Caresty and Kevin went from working as a hair stylist and a trim carpenter in Mississippi to owning a thriving business called Spartan Nutrition in Saraland, Alabama.

Their journey has not been easy… but it has been rewarding.

It also HAD to work as there was “No Plan B”.

Her story will inspire you and build your faith 🙂

Episode 27 – Healing Herbs (Part 1)

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at how a few of our favorite herbs and how they can be used to help you battle stress, keep your memory sharp and reduce inflammation

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 27 - Healing Herbs, Part 1

Stressed?

Memory not what it once was?

Body inflamed?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, don't worry.

We've got you covered.

Specifically, on this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we're going to talk about some herbs that may be just what you need.

(Always check with your health care provider first.)

Here's the thing about herbs:

They've been around for thousands of years as a natural way to treat various health conditions.

Unfortunately, they lost some of their shine when prescriptive drugs became popular approximately 100 years ago.

But the times, they are a changing.

Herbs are making a comeback... and in a big way.

People are tired of all the dangerous side effects associated with prescription drugs.

They want more natural ways to deal with health issues.

They want herbs!

So, herbs it is.

On this episode we talk about three healing herbs in particular:

1) Ashwaganda
2) Ginkgo Biloba
3) Turmeric

All three of these herbs provide a natural, safe and effective alternative to prescriptive drugs.

All three of these herbs should own a spot in your health “toolbox”… ready to be used if needed.

And, all three of these herbs are discussed in this week’s episode.

So please give it a listen and, as always, consider sharing it with a friend.

Episode 26 – The Power of the Mind in Health and Healing

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at how our thoughts and beliefs affect our health and ability to heal.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 26 - The Power of the Mind in Health and Healing

There is no doubt that our thoughts impact our health.

Good thoughts are good for you… bad thoughts aren’t.

That’s easy enough to understand but it goes much deeper than that.

For example, when you are sick, it’s normal to become consumed with how bad you feel.

You think about your symptoms, you talk about them, you even Google them.

But is this productive?

Not really.

Why?

Because your physiology follows your thoughts.

Therefore, focusing your mind on your symptoms will reinforce an unhealthy state.

However, focusing your mind on healthy thoughts will steer your body towards health.

Yes, it’s challenging, but try to focus your mind on HEALTH, not disease… ESPECIALLY when you don’t feel well.

But that’s not all.

While positive thinking is important, “right” thinking is imperative.

Specifically with regard to health, there are three distinctions you really should be clear about.

Three distinctions that - along with the importance of “positive” thinking - we discuss on this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast.

These three distinctions involve understanding the difference between:

1) Health Care and Disease Care
2) Allopathic Medicine and Holistic Medicine
3) A Healer and A Teacher

By the time you’re done listening to this episode, you should be healthier than when you started.

All because your thoughts will be better 🙂

Episode 25 – Prevention IS The Best Medicine: Supplements To Strengthen Your Immune System

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at the supplements we take to keep our Immune Systems healthy and strong.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 25 - Prevention IS The Best Medicine: Supplements To Strengthen Your Immune System

On last week’s episode we talked about how this upcoming winter may be the worst one ever… especially with regard to our health.

Stress from the Coronavirus, schools potentially closing, and the presidential election will add to the “normal” stress of the holidays.

Throw in a potential economic downturn and the ingredients are there for a really bad “cold and flu” season.

Fortunately there ARE things you can do.

Natural things that will boost your health and prepare you to battle any bug or virus that may come your way.

We’ve already talked about three of them: Exercise, Sleep and Sunshine.

On this episode we talk about another one.

Supplements.

Specifically, we discuss the supplements that we take to strengthen our Immune System.

BetyLou shares with you her top 7 supplements while I share with you the three that I take daily.

Interestingly, this summer we each have increased the amount of supplements we take for the Immune System.

We suggest you do the same.

The ones we share with you should give you some ideas for getting started.

As always, thank you for listening and please share this with a friend.

Episode 23 – God’s Vitamin: The Sun

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at one of the most powerful, and controversial, influences on your health: the sun!

(For some reason, our regular audio player is misbehaving.  Please click the button below to hear this week's episode. Thanks!)

Episode 23 - God’s Vitamin: The Sun

Everyone loves the sun, right?

Wrong.

Everyone SHOULD love the sun.

Unfortunately, the sun gets a bad rap.

You know, stuff like “it causes melanoma (skin cancer)”.

Or, "it’s really bad for your eyes… or skin… or hair."

Not only are these statements NOT true, they may actually be quite dangerous.

Why?

Because anything that keeps you from "getting sun" may be harming your health.

You see, God put the sun up in the sky for a reason... a reason you really need to know:

So that you can look, feel and BE your best.

The sun makes that possible.

But not just the part of the sun that manufacturers try to put into pill form and sell as Vitamin D.

The WHOLE spectrum of sunlight... just as God made it.

(I actually refer to the sun as Vitamin S: "God's favorite vitamin.")

This whole spectrum of sunlight provides our bodies with benefits beyond what you've ever been taught.

Benefits that can help make you healthy and strong.

Specifically, on this week's episode of the podcast we'll discuss how the sun...

- Benefits your Hormones
- Helps prevent 20 types of cancer
- May be the “missing piece” in your weight loss battle
- Can lead to a better night’s sleep
- Reduces certain types of depression

We'll also discuss the major role sunshine plays in skin diseases such as acne, eczema and psoriasis...

...plus we'll reveal a special MENS ONLY benefit that few guys know anything about.

As always, thank you for listening and please share this with a friend.

Episode 21 – The Healthy Gut Protocol: Part 2 – “Supplements”

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) continue our discussion regarding “The Healthy Gut Protocol”. Specifically, we suggest the exact supplements you may need to get your digestive system healthy and strong.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 21 - The Healthy Gut Protocol: Part 2- Supplements

Everyone wants to know which supplements they should take to restore the health of their digestive system.

This episode provides the answers.

We start by discussing the specific diet we believe will help restore your gut’s health… along with the 3 core supplements you should consider taking EVERY day.

We then describe a 10 Day Gut Reset Protocol that is intended to act as a “framework” you can be used with the guidance of a health care professional. (It is NOT intended to to be used as a treatment or program without such guidance.)

There are three phases in this protocol process, each involving specific supplements:

Phase 1: Digestion

In this phase the emphasis is on digestion… breaking down your foods into usable parts.

Supplements: digestive enzyme (Zypan, AF Betafood, and/or Diaplex) and natural laxative (Colax)

Phase 2: Elimination

In this phase the emphasis is on eliminating parasites and other unhealthy bugs from your digestive system.

Supplements: Parasite Cleansing Herbs (Wormwood and Zymex 2)

Phase 3: Restoration

In this phase the emphasis is on restoring the good bugs into your digestive system.

Supplements: Prebiotic (GI Stability) and Probiotic (Lact-Enz)

————————

By the end of this episode you should have clarity on the direction you want to go with regard to gut health.

Episode 20 – The Healthy Gut Protocol

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) talk about WHY gut health is important, HOW gut problems develop and WHAT can be done to correct them

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 20 - The Healthy Gut Protocol

WHY, HOW, WHAT

On this episode we begin discussing a protocol that you can implement to improve the health of your gut.

We start by addressing three questions:

1) WHY is Gut Health important?
2) HOW do Gut Problems develop?
3) WHAT can be done to correct Gut Problems?

1) WHY is Gut Health important?

Because it influences the health of every system of your body! The Immune System, The Hormone System, The Nervous System and, of course, the Digestive System.

In addition, EVERY Autoimmune Disorder appears to begin in the gut… and the big “killers” - Heart Disease, Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes - all are negatively impacted by gut dysfunction.

2) HOW do Gut Problems develop?

Poor dietary choices… and stress.

3) WHAT can be done to correct Gut Problems?

Eat better and work on reducing/eliminating stress. (Yes, we know that’s easier said than done).

Supplements also play a huge role… and will be the topic of our next episode.

Needless to say, we dive deeper into each of these question in an episode that flows quickly and is full of good information.

As always, please leave a comment and share this episode with a friend.

Episode 19 – The Role of the Microbiome in Health and Disease

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) look at the hottest topic in health and disease: the Microbiome

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 19 - The Role of the Microbiome in Health and Disease

On the past seven episodes we have talked about the Digestive System… literally from top to bottom.

Today, we take a look at the millions of “bugs” that line most of the digestive tract. Bugs that include bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and parasites.

Collectively, these bugs are know as the “Microbiome” and they play a huge role in determining a person’s overall level of health and disease.

For example, your brain, your hormones, your immune system, your skin, your digestion, your heart, and even your pain levels are ALL strongly impacted by the health of your Microbiome.

Amazing, right?

So, how does one maintain a healthy Microbiome?

What things damage it?

How can I repair it?

These, and many other topics, including Probiotic supplements are discussed on this week’s episode.

You don’t want to miss it!

As always, please leave a comment and share this episode with a friend.

Episode 18 – More Than Just A “Pathway For Poop”

On this episode of the Get Healthy Alabama podcast we (Dr. George Burroughs and BetyLou Pierce) continue our study of the Digestive System by looking at the many important functions of the Large Intestine.

(May take a few seconds to begin playing)

Episode 18 - More Than Just A “Pathway For Poop”

Did you know that the food you eat has a job… and it’s NOT to “make you feel good?”

The food you eat is meant to nourish you.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good meal but the primary reason I eat isn't for the food to make me happy.

It’s for the food to nourish me!

“How” it does that is through a process called digestion.

Digestion starts with food entering the mouth. It is chewed and then sent to the stomach where it is broken down into small, usable pieces.

When the stomach finishes its job, the food passes into the Small Intestine for further breakdown.

Once the food is completely broken down, the “good” parts of the food - the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars - are ABSORBED into the body so that they can be taken to the muscles, glands and organs.

This is all great, but I have a question:

What happens to the parts of the food that were NOT needed by the body?

The parts that were deemed “not good?”

It’s actually quite simple:

The “unwanted” food - along with toxins and dead bacteria - continues down the digestive tract and enters the Large Intestine (also known as the “colon”) before eventually being eliminated via a bowel movement.

Not very exciting, right?

Well, actually it is.

You see, a lot actually goes on in the Large Intestine.  So much so that it takes about two full days for this unwanted “food” to pass through the Large Intestine.

What happens during that time and how does it impact your health?

THAT is the topic of this episode.

Specifically, we will discuss:

The importance of making sure that whatever enters the Large Intestine LEAVES the Large Intestine. (Toxins laying around can lead to colon cancer)

The first question every doctor should ask a patient

The importance of the “fiber-water” combination

Our favorite herb for dealing with constipation

Our favorite supplements for dealing with hemorrhoids

Our suggestion for eliminating parasites

We also discuss how the Large Intestine is home to so much of our body’s microflora… the bacteria that has a profound impact on our health.
